Major Upsets in San Clemente: PPA Orange County Cup

PPA Orange County Cup:

The PPA Tour traveled to the West Coast for the PPA Orange County Cup. With the biggest crowd that pickleball has ever seen, matches were more intense than ever. Top seeds fought their way to the finals, while some fell early on in a thrilling upset. For a full list of results, visit pickleballbrackets.com. 

Men's Doubles:

In the men’s doubles category at the PPA OC Cup, Pablo Tellez and Hayden Patriquin started strong, defeating Jack Munro and Julian Arnold with identical scores of 11-7 in the semifinals. Dylan Frazier and JW Johnson also secured their place in the finals by overcoming Dekel Bar and Tyson McGuffin, winning 11-4, 11-9.

Next, the finals saw Frazier and Johnson continue their dominant form, defeating Tellez and Patriquin in a straight-set victory: 11-7, 11-7, 11-6. For the bronze medal, Bar and McGuffin bounced back to beat Munro and Arnold in a three-set battle, 11-9, 8-11, 11-2.

One of the biggest surprises in the men’s doubles came in the quarterfinals when the 12th-seeded duo of Jack Munro and Julian Arnold upset the 3rd-seeded team of Matt Wright and Federico Staksrud, winning 11-7, 11-8.

Men's Singles:

Federico Staksrud and Chris Haworth emerged victorious in their respective semifinal matches. Staksrud defeated Tyson McGuffin 11-5, 11-5 and Haworth overcame Ben Johns in a thrilling three-set match: 11-4, 3-11, 11-7.

In the finals, Haworth showcased his resilience and skill, coming from behind to defeat Staksrud 9-11, 11-5, 11-7. The PPA Orange County Cup marks Haworth's first Men's Singles title. Ben Johns secured the bronze medal by defeating McGuffin 11-8, 11-1.

The men’s singles draw saw a major upset in the Round of 32, where the 28th seed Donald Young stunned the 3rd seed Connor Garnett, winning 11-2, 2-11, 11-7.

Mixed Doubles:

The mixed doubles semifinals featured some intense matches, with Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters narrowly defeating Jorja and JW Johnson 11-3, 5-11, 12-10. Waters and Johns fought off five match points against the sibling duo. Simultaneously, Christian Alshon and Catherine Parenteau secured their spot in the finals by overcoming Vivian Glozman and Hayden Patriquin 11-3, 14-12.

Johns and Waters displayed their prowess in the finals, winning decisively against Alshon and Parenteau 11-0, 11-7, 11-4. Jorja and JW Johnson claimed the bronze medal with a dominant 11-1, 11-1 victory over Glozman and Patriquin.

A significant upset in the mixed doubles came in the Round of 16, where the 16th-seeded team of Glozman and Patriquin defeated the 2nd seeds Anna Bright and James Ignatowich, 11-6, 11-4.

Women's Doubles:

Anna Leigh Waters and Catherine Parenteau proved to be an unstoppable force in the women’s doubles, cruising through the semifinals with an 11-1, 11-2 victory over Allyce Jones and Irina Tereschenko. Jessie Irvine and Tina Pisnik reached the finals by defeating Parris Todd and Tyra Black in three sets, 7-11, 11-2, 11-7.

The finals saw Waters and Parenteau dominate, winning 11-2, 11-6, 11-8 to claim the PPA OC Cup title. Todd and Black secured the bronze medal by beating Jones and Tereschenko 11-1, 11-4.

A notable upset occurred in the Round of 16, with the 13th-seeded duo of Brooke Buckner and Chao Yi Wang defeating the 3rd seeds Lucy Kovalova and Callie Smith, 11-5, 11-7.

Women's Singles:

Anna Leigh Waters continued her impressive run in the women’s singles, defeating Judit Castillo 11-2, 11-4 in the semifinals. Catherine Parenteau advanced to the finals by beating Brooke Buckner 11-7, 11-5.

In the final showdown, Waters triumphed over Parenteau with a straight-set victory, 11-6, 11-6. Judit Castillo claimed the bronze medal with a convincing 11-4, 11-4 win over Buckner.

The women’s singles draw saw a major upset in the Round of 32, where the 35th seed Milan Rane defeated the 7th seed Parris Todd, winning 11-7, 11-5.

Next Up:

Following the PPA Orange County Cup, the players have earned themselves a bit of a break. The PPA Tour takes a brief hiatus from regular tournament play, and won't return until the beginning of August. However, Major League Pickleball will team up with the PPA for the MLP Mid-Season Tournament in Grand Rapids, MI during 7/10-14.
